What makes Wales my home?

Building bridges after Brexit: Creating a common ground between EU citizens and local people in Welsh communities

This innovative project aimed to find out more about how and why EU citizens chose to make Wales their home and to build connections between them and local people.  Most of the project was delivered online due to lockdown restrictions.

Aims

• Increase local residents’ understanding around migration, and why people have migrated to Wales.
• Dispel negative stereotypes about EU migrants.
• Develop shared experiences around the theme ‘what makes Wales my home’.
• Find ‘common ground’ between communities to help to bring people together.

What we did

This project was based in Swansea, and listened to people from diverse communities telling their stories of how and why Wales became their home.

Outputs

Project outputs included:

• A video bringing together people’s stories
• Four individual videos telling the experiences of Stavros, Sara, Christiane and Robert
• A booklet summarising key findings with quotes and illustrations
• A webinar on the experiences of EU migrants living in Swansea with guest speakers, Minister for Social Justice, Jane Hutt Ms and CEO of youth organisation EYST, Rocio Cifuentes.

Funding

The project was kindly funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and completed in Sept. 2020.
