Debt is a problem for about one in seven of the Welsh population. This overview of debt in Wales was commissioned by the Public Policy Institute Wales, to advise Welsh Ministers of the scale of the issue.

The review finds that 16% of the population has problem debt of one sort or another, with concentrations of debt in the south Wales valleys and north Wales coast.

Debt is strongly associated with low income, with trigger factors such as sudden falls in income, changes in family circumstances or unexpected bills all pushing people into financial difficulty.

The report was commissioned by the Public Policy Institute Wales. The Bevan Foundation was paid £1,800 to carry out the review.
