Coleg Gwent asks “How fair is Wales?”
More than 200 Coleg Gwent students sought answers to the question “how fair is Wales” at their annual lecture at Crosskeys Campus yesterday, 23rd October 2012. Bevan Foundation Director, Victoria Winckler, explained the current law on equality and then showed students how their communities are still marred by inequality between different groups of people. Drawing on the Foundation’s recent report How Fair is Wales, Victoria said “Despite 30 years of legislation, women in Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport and Torfaen still only earn 80% of men’s pay. Only half of disabled people in the area have a job, and people from ethnic minorities are twice as likely to be unemployed as white people.”
Victoria urged students not to tolerate inequality. “They should take action, by getting help to deal with incidents of discrimination, harassment or violence,” she said. “By working together students can build a fairer world.”
